Where did I leave off?

It has been a long time!

Last night I went to a movie at our local theatre to see the movie “Therese,” a film about the life of a cloistered nun from the city of Lesieux, France. She lived her quiet life there over 100 years ago.

I have read the story of her life several times. This movie attempts to depict it well, but it pictures her as a young nun who never sins in any way. This is not very realistic for anyone. Also, the movie could not really portray the austere life she led. For example, in real life these cloistered nuns were not allowed to talk…hardly ever…but, of course, there had to be dialogue in the movie. They couldn’t just use hand signs and other substitute methods of communicating and make it understandable for average viewer.

I really had to laugh by the fact that she had to travel to Rome to obtain permission from the Pope to enter the cloister at the age of 15. A hundred years later, I didn’t get anyone’s permission to enter the convent at that same age, not even my mother's. Her parents were wealthy; mine were not. If my mom would have had to travel to Rome, I would have had to wait until I was of an legal age to enter.
Anyway, I doubt that this movie will attract very large crowds. It may be of some interest to those interested in church history and to those Catholics who have a long standing devotion to this saint as an example of one way to live out the Christian life. At the beginning of her convent life, she was intent to please God by her own plans. She was a spoiled, coddled, self-centered, rich girl who loved God. As she matured, the film did portray how she learned and was transformed by God’ grace. She realized that God does not expect wondrous deeds from us but rather quiet service to others in “little ways.”

It did give me incentive to continue my convent stories... soon.

i may watch this if I ever see it at Blockbuster...however I doubt it will be at the theater...Not a big draw for the military crowds.
